2015 - Monterey, Napa, Sonoma
Enticing sweet toasted oak aromas supporting ripe, dark fruit flavors and juicy acidity draw you in as the expansive mid palate volume fills out this latest offering from Monterey, Napa, and Sonoma Counties. Like the Z. Alexander Brown Cabernet Sauvignon and Red Blend the 2015 tri-county Z. Alexander Brown Pinot Noir is big and bold. Still faithful to the variety, this wine celebrates rich ripe fruit and bold mouth-watering oak.
In 2015, a mild winter forced an early bud break, followed by a prolonged bloom and unusually cool spring temperatures that produced smaller berries, fewer clusters and therefore, reduced yields compared to the last three record-breaking vintages. After a hot, dry summer, a temperature spike in late August accelerated ripening and triggered an earlier harvest than usual. All of these elements resulted in high quality grapes statewide – balanced acidity levels, intense aromatics and concentrated colors and flavors
Throughout the growing season, I visited each vineyard block regularly. The fruit for Z. Alexander Brown was harvested during the cool early morning hours to ensure that the concentrated fruit flavors were captured at the peak of ripeness. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were de-stemmed into stainless steel fermenters for a 48-hour cold soak to extract color from the skins and enhance the delicate berry flavors. Following the completion of primary fermentation, the wine was gently pressed and clean racked into a selection of French and American oak barrels and elevage tanks where the wines underwent secondary malolactic fermentation. After several months of aging, the final cuvée was blended featuring a selection of the best lots of the vintage.
