The 2015 vintage in Napa Valley continued the recent trend of warm, dry and ideal growing conditions. Early warm Spring weather allowed the vines to break bud early. Thankfully, the warming trend continued and our vines were off to a strong and healthy start. While California experienced drought conditions, the dry heat actually helped the vines to grow powerfully-concentrated, high-quality fruit. As harvest began the weather cooled slightly allowing slow ripening and promoting impressively complex, full-bodied flavor.
Our grapes are hand-picked during the early morning hours at optimal ripeness. Upon arrival at the winery, we hand-sort the fruit before it is destemmed for fermentation. After a few days of cold soaking, we add yeast to initiate the fermentation process. We 'pump-over' many times during the 14–21 day fermentation, allowing for maximum extraction of fruit flavor, color and tannin from the skins. We then carefully and slowly transferred the wine to barrels to continue to develop and mature. The wines were allowed to mature for 20 months in barrel before being blended and preapred for bottling.
